UCLA head men’s volleyball coach John Speraw, who has produced three NCAA titles and a 2016 Olympic Bronze medal finish as a head coach, completed his ninth season at the helm in Westwood in 2021. During his collegiate coaching career he has been named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Coach of the Year, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Coach of the Year and Volleyball Magazine Coach of the Year.

In September 2003, Scates was named as a coach to the USA Volleyball Men's All-Era Team for the period between 1978-2002, joining former Bruin players Doug Partie and Karch Kiraly. On October 3, 2003 Scates was inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame, the first active coach in UCLA history to be enshrined.

Speraw has been the head men’s volleyball coach at UCLA since 2012 and continues in a dual role with the U.S. Men’s Team. In 2018, he guided UCLA to the NCAA Division I Championship final, losing to Long Beach State in five sets. Speraw joined the U.S. Men’s staff in 2007 under then head coach Hugh McCutcheon.

Scates is the winningest volleyball coach in the history of the NCAA , and the 19 NCAA titles the Bruins won during his tenure ties him for the most NCAA titles won by a coach in a single sport with Arkansas' John McDonnell (Indoor Track and Field ).
